Checklist to assess if an animal is really in need:
001. Is the animal injured, with visible wounds or broken limbs or wings? Call a wildlife rehabilitator immediately.002. Find a baby animal without a parent ( do not see a dead parent near by)? If parent does not return within 24 hours, or the baby is cold, covered with maggots or injured; call a wildlife rehabilitator. Remember, raccoons, fawns, opossums and many other animals are nocturnal and the babies are not, so you often won’t see the parent.
003. Please do not feed the animal. It can be harmed by improper food or drink, especially cow’s milk is not digestible and will cause diarrhea, dehydration and even death in about a week. You may give water only, no food, please.
004. Place the animal in box in a dark quiet warm place (use a pop bottle of warm water covered with a sock), away from human noise and pets.
If you aren’t sure whether an animal needs help, call one of the licensed area rehabilitators in Marquette County for advice.
